A visit with More Hilarious Errors

I'd love to learn more!

I am learning, but I have so much more I need and want to learn. Below, I summarize the problems I'm having. If you want, you can skip the explanations, and go directly to My Question. However, the explanation might help you help me; I don't really know.

I've left some stuff here that comes from my Home page; it helps fill out the area so the leaves in the columns will have to travel farther, if I can learn how to get them to do that.

My Personal Site: My Misses

Errors, Hilarious and Otherwise

This is my personal web site. At least I'm not too seriously inconveniencing anybody by testing. I trust.

My mission here is to share with you my ways of seeing: whimsical, fun, and sometimes serious, but always with whimsy, for healthy perspective. Greatly added to, surely, by the errors that slip out of my hands.

This page is formatted mostly by an external style sheet, which mostly resembles the one I use to control the other pages on Coherent Dog.

However, in this one, I have given columns one and three a mauve, or light purple, background-color. When I solve the "leaves problems," or, the problems with alignment or columns one and three (also known as the Bottomless Pit problem, or, Falling Down the Well), then I will take the background-color out of columns one and three, leaving only the leaves.

My Question Today Is

How can I get the leaves in columns one and three to fill the height of the column - that is, to match closely the height in column two?

Remarks: The background image (the leaves) are specified in test405.css, under the definitions for "column1" and "column3," with the single exception that I have overridden height definitions by embedding them in the tags for this test page.

Unexpected results

HEY! Wait a minute. I cut a lot of stuff out of here, so it wasn't nearly as long as my Home Page after all. But then, when I looked at this page, indeed, the leaves extend the full height of THIS page - and more! So column two is shorter than columns one and three. For the moment.

I wonder if my external style sheet is overriding the embedded tags here, or whether I have the embedded tags wrong! You can find the embedded tags, in the specifications for columns one and three, by viewing the source code for this page.

I quote:

<div id="column1" style="height 100%; margin-bottom: 1em;">

And similarly for column three.

Astounding!

I have no idea what happened, but itlooks as though I went through all this writing and testing, only to find this thing is working as I had hoped. If that is true, and I'll have to test to make sure, then I can take the background color out of columns one and three.

Well, no, it's not quite working; not exactly. It looks close, but not exact.
