Cutie has complex conditions

Late in November, 2009, Cutie, ten-year-old cocker mix, was diagnosed with pancreatitis, Cushings, and diabetes mellitus.

What an overload, for her Human DogDad! Sensible DogDad went researching, asking questions. He inquired on at least three different forums. Two of these in particular are easy to track, since each dog has its own thread.

We can track Cutie and her Human DogDad on the k9diabetes forum, where the numbers for this curve appear, and also, on the k9cushings.forum

It's quite an education to read of Cutie on both forums. One doesn't hope for so much complication as a combination of pancreatitis, which can be acute, and passing, or chronic, with diabetes mellitus, which is the type of diabetes we talk about here on Coherent Dog - and Cushings disease as well.

As of this writing, 3 March 2010, it's not really clear that Cutie has Cushings as well as diabetes mellitus. Further testing may be required to confirm a diagnosis of Cushings, though Cutie appears to have that disease.

It seems that for now, again as of 3 March 2010, Cutie has recovered from the pancreatitis. That is lovely. Let's hope she stays recovered!

This curve, which the veterinarian took, shows excellent glucose control. Human DogDad reported that the times of the readings weren't exact, though the data from the veterinarian gave the times as shown. However, the readings might have varied by about fifteen minutes either way.

A variation of fifteen minutes doesn't make a lot of difference to interpreting this curve; using the results to help determine what to do with insulin dose seems entirely reasonable.

CLAIMER: Content here results from my personal experience, as instructed by my fabulous veterinarians and veterinary technicians, and also, as instructed by Kumbi. Even Kwali gets a word in edgewise. We use the Lip-Stick. There are other locations you can prick for blood; I do not myself use them, but there are web resources that show them.
