Kumbi's glucose readings. May-June 2010

[kubgbadsyrop-g3.jpg] Kumbi's BGs with bad BD syringes

BG readings, 29-31 May, 1-2 June 2010

For convenience, I'm repeating readings here from the previous page, and adding the new ones at the bottom.

I feed at 6:20 a.m. and p.m., and give insulin at 7 a.m. and p.m.

This first list is a full curve, taking readings every two hours, starting before food in the morning, and finishing before insulin in the evening.

Saturday, 29 May 2010

  1. 06:31 - 23.7 mmol/L = 427 mg/dL (fed; 06:31)
  2. 07:01 - 27.6 mmol/L = 497 mg/dL (RAISED Novolin-NPH to 6.5 iu; 07:01)
  3. 09:01 - 24.2 mmol/L = 436 mg/dL
  4. Walk, mod-brisk pace; low excite; 09:54-10:24 (30 min)
  5. 11:03 - 19.6 mmol/L = 353 mg/dL
  6. 13:01 - 23.1 mmol/L = 416 mg/dL
  7. Walk - mod-brisk pace; mod excite (Marg-chat) 13:14 - 13:53 (39 min)
  8. 15:01 - 17.6 mmol/L = 317 mg/dL
  9. 17:05 - 13.9 mmol/L = 250 mg/dL
  10. 18:31 - 13.5 mmol/L = 243 mg/dL (fed; 18:31)
  11. 19:01 - 15.6 mmol/L = 281 mg/dL (Novolin-NPH; 6.5 iu; 19:01)

Here, and on 31 May also, I'm taking morning and evening readings just before feeding, and just before giving insulin. To those two pairs of readings, I'm adding my attempt to identify Kumbi's spproximate lowest glucose for the day. (This time is sometimes termed the "nadir," or "trough.," The idea is to know just how low he's dropping, because it's the low-glucose for the day that determines what the insulin dose should be - to avoid hypoglycemic episodes. Of course, the highs are important, too, but it's dangerous to allow a dog to slip into hypoglycemia (too-low glucose), but being too high in glucose can be managed in some way, without endangering the dog.

Nadir-time varies individually with each dog, and with insulin, food and exercise as well. Other conditions can also affect nadir-time.

  1. 06:31 - 16.5 mmol/L = 297 mg/dL (fed; 06:31)
  2. 07:01 - 20.1 mmol/L = 362 mg/dL (Novolin-NPH; 6.5 iu, 07:01)
  3. Walk - mod-brisk pace; mod-high excite (chats, catscent); 09:48-10:27 (39 min)
  4. Walk - mod-brisk, light drizzle; low excite; 14:32-15:06 (34 min)
  5. 15:31 - 7.6 mmol/L = 137 mg/dL
  6. 17:00 - 12.6 mmol/L = 227 mg/dL
  7. 18:30 - 23.8 mmol/L = 429 mg/dL (fed; 18:30)
  8. 19:01 - 27.1 mmol/L = 488 mg/dL (Novolin-NPH; 6.5 iu; 19:01)

Monday, 31 May 2010

This set of readings is again partial. I'm trying to catch Kumbi's low-time of the day, as well as to determine how high he is going.

  1. 06:30 - 24.6 mmol/L = 443 mg/dL (fed; 06:31)
  2. 07:01 - 25.4 mmol/L = 458 mg/dL (Novolin-NPH; 6.5 iu; 07:01)
  3. Walk - mod pace; low excite; 10:33-11:25 (52 min)
  4. Walk - mod pace; mod excite - met neighbor and dog; 14:37-15:19 (42 min)
  5. 15:31 - 9.3 mmol/L = 168 mg/dL
  6. 17:04 - 8.8 mmol/L = 159 mg/dL
  7. 18:31 - 7.8 mmol/L = 141 mg/dL (fed; 18:31)
  8. 19:01 - 12.5 mmol/L = 223 mg/dL (Novolin-NPH; 6.5 iu; 19:01)

Tuesday, 1 June 2010

This set of readings is again partial. I'm trying to catch Kumbi's low-time of the day, as well as to determine how high he is going.

Kumbi was running unexpectedly low in the afternoon- and I suddenly realized I might have used a bad BD syringe - one that allows the plunger to go beyond the zero mark. Probably that occurred the evening of 31 May, so instead of giving the 6.5 units I intended, almost certainly, I injected 6.75, or even 7.0 units.

  1. 06:31 - 16.9 mmol/L = 305 mg/dL (fed; 06:31)
  2. 07:01 - 19.7 mmol/L = 355 mg/dL (Novolin-NPH; 6.5 iu; 07:01) (or was it 6.75 or 7.0?)
  3. Walk - mod pace, low excite; 10:21-11:02 (41 min)
  4. Walk - mod pace, low excite; 14:40-15:16 (36 min)
  5. 15:31 - 5.6 mmol/L = 101 mg/dL
  6. 17:01 - 5.4 mmol/L = 97 mg/dL
  7. 18:31 - 4.8 mmol/L = 86 mg/dL (fed; 18:31)
  8. 19:01 - 6.7 mmol/L = 129 mg/dL (Novolin-NPH CUT - gave 6.25 iu; 19:01) PLANS - check syringes, discard bad ones; try 6.5 again in the morning. (depending on readings).

Updates will follow. Of course!
